For audio TOS037: The Sacraments – Confirmation – Truth of the Spirit (podcast) | Listen Notes

Join Patti Brunner for Confirmation, from the new Truth of the Spirit series “The Eucharist and Other Sacraments”. This first episode introduces the concept of sacrament and begins with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The flow of the Spirit and the Spirit’s gifts is taught by the Catechism to take root at the decision to be open to God. The sacraments –the signs-of initiation of Baptism and Confirmation witness the choice and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit’s presence. Patti Brunner finds truth within the Catechism; the truth is potential. Each person who receives the sign of the Presence of God among us receives the potential to change the world. Week by week, day by day, hour by hour, the Holy Spirit dwells within those confirmed in the faith. This indelible mark is eternal; it should be clearly visible by the life led by those who have received it. The sign provides power and strength to wall always in the grace of the Lord.

Watching the Saints – Lesser Known Saints. Join Patti Brunner to look at the lives of Saint Joseph of Cupertino, Saint Josephine Bakhita and St. John Bosco. It was quite easy for movie makers to choose these three saints as subjects for their movies because of their unique stories: Joseph of Cupertino: a dim-witted flying monk, Bakhita: a tattooed slave, and John Bosco: a gatherer of delinquent boys. The movies artfully portray the lives of these saints and Patti Brunner will give you some of the truth behind the poetic license of the moviemakers about these inspiring saints. This is the final and fourth of a series of movie reviews on movies about saints.

Episode TOS034  Truth of the Spirit’s “Watching the Saints”. Join Patti Brunner for Christian movies review to look at a couple of saints whose movies are based on their own account of their lives.  Today we would call them autobiographies but both St. Augustine’s and St. Patrick’s were called “Confession” and seem to be a “tell all” to the Church.  Both of these men had events in their youth that were scandalous which makes their conversion stories more interesting.  See the contrasts and similarities of these saints who were contemporaries of one another.  A closer look at St. Augustine and St. Patrick shows us how one person who turns their face to God can make a difference as we continue to honor them 1700 years later..

Truth of the Spirit episode TOS033  Watching the Saints-Noah and Joan of Arc. Join Patti Brunner for an entertaining movie review series that targets saints.  Patti has discovered that the ratings given to modern movies by the motion picture industry don’t always give the truth about the moral objections to the screening.  She recommends the USSCB Movie Guide. This Truth of the Spirit episode of Watching the Saints finds the glaring flaws as Patti looks at various movie versions about Noah who was instructed by God to build an ark to save mankind from total destruction during a world-wide flood and others about a young teenaged peasant girl, Joan of Arc, who was told by God to save France by standing up for truth above destructive evil and political forces and leading soldiers into battle.  By weeding out misleading videos of these characters and watching truthful stories these heroic characters you will be encouraged to follow their examples of obedience to God despite opposition by forces of evil.

Summary  Truth of the Spirit episode TOS032 Season of Living Bread. Join Patti Brunner as she welcomes Msgr. David LeSieur in a broadcast of Living Seasons of Change. They discuss the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.  In the Season of Living Bread we find the truth of the Living Word—the sacrifice shared; the nourishment for the journey into the kingdom, and the fullness of the Presence of God.  In John 6: 51 Jesus says, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.”  Jesus gave himself for our life, and for our ongoing nourishment in the form of the Eucharist.  It is through the Eucharist that we too, can receive the same living bread made present at the Last Supper.  This episode discusses the Church’s liturgical scriptural readings from 18-21st Sundays of Ordinary Time Year B which focus on the Gospel of John Chapter 6.

Truth of the Spirit Podcast TOS031 Prayer through Fasting with Patti Brunner of the series Prayer-Reaching Out to God. Have you ever had the doldrums when it came to prayer time and you just found yourself seemingly going through the motions?  Or perhaps you even found it impossible to pray?  When distractions overwhelm you to where your mind just won’t settle down and focus?  Does that happen to you?   I have an answer for you!  Enter into the prayer of fasting!  St. Thomas Aquinas says that “we fast for three purposes:  to restrain the desires of the flesh; to raise the mind to contemplate sublime things; and to make satisfaction for our sins.”  St. John Chrysostom realized that fasting is not only from food. It’s not just food that leads us away from God.  He recommended, “Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin.”  Join Patti Brunner for this episode as she shows how the Church encourages us to fast and the benefits that can come forth.
