Whenever Truth of the Spirit speaks of the Blessed Mother it is a good thing. She is never ‘off track’. God’s daughter, sister, mother—these relationships set an example for the world to follow. Disciple, apostle, servant—these too were her attributes and allowed her to be a role model on earth and for all generations that followed. She was prophesied as a prototype not only of womanhood but of mankind. Obedience, humility, strength-standing-fortitude, loving—these attributes came from her personal will as she said “yes” her “fiat”; Spirit-filled, pure, holy—these were God’s gifts to her that the Lord offers to all who turn their face to God and accepts them with obedience, humility and fortitude.
Welcome to Truth of the Spirit, I’m your host Patti Brunner. Today we will present “Holy Mary God’s Blueprint for Mankind”.
In Genesis Chapter 1, when mankind was created, the first female became the first daughter of God. When this first couple was told, “Be fertile and multiply” she was to become the mother of all. However, the first couple, Adam and Eve, chose not to trust God. They chose to disobey God and through the deadly sin of pride they lost the privilege to live forever in paradise. Eve’s first child Cain was conceived after Adam and Eve turned away from God’s plan and sinned. Their children inherited the lack of holiness caused by the original sin and compounded sin with their own freewill. Cain became a murderer, killing his brother Abel. The blueprint of God was definitely set aside by mankind.
When God created Holy Mary within the womb of her mother Ann, He restored the blueprint of mankind to his original specifications. She, like Eve, was created in his image. Holy Mary, full of grace, became the “New Eve” and the Immaculate Conception without the inheritance of the original sin. By this creative act of God, mankind was getting a “do-over”. This time, the daughter of God, Mary, was not disobedient. Rather than pride, she humbly responded to God, in Luke Chapter 1:38 when she said, “Let it be done to me according to your word” when God asked her to be fruitful and multiply by becoming the mother of Jesus. The Blessed Virgin Mary became the ‘New Eve’ thus fulfilling the role of mother of all; she became fruitful to bear Jesus. Through her fruit, her son Jesus, the whole world was given the possibility of participating in God’s plan of living in paradise forever with Him.
In our previous episode in this Blueprint series “Holy of Holies and Hebrews” PatriarchMinistries.com/171 we described how the blueprint for the Tabernacle foreshadowed the priesthood of Jesus. We now want you to realize how the Ark of the Covenant, described by God to Moses, also foreshadows God’s blueprint fulfilled by Holy Mary. Through her creation without original sin she was created the Holy of Holies. Within the tabernacle of her womb dwelled Jesus. Just like the Ark of the Covenant, within her dwelled the presence of God, Jesus, who is the Word of God, the High Priest, and the Bread of Life. Within her womb the New Covenant was formed, true man and true God. The ‘real’ tabernacle comes down from heaven. It is Jesus. For the first time Man was truly able to have the Holy Spirit within him. Mary also was among the first to be overshadowed by this presence and the living tabernacle was formed within her womb and she became the Ark of the New Covenant.
Through complete obedience to God, through complete humility, Holy Mary the gentle mother became a serpent killer. Even though the snake of evil attacked her heel repeatedly through seven sorrows, Mary’s free will obedience to God allowed the crushing of the head of the snake of evil as prophesied by God in Genesis Chapter 3, verse 15.
Let’s recall those 7 Sorrows of Mary:
The 1 st Sorrow: The Prophecy of Simeon given in Luke Chapter 2:34-35 when during the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple, the prophet Simeon blessed them and prophesied to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and” he said to the Blessed Mother, “and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
The 2 nd Sorrow is The Flight into Egypt in Matthew Chapter 2:13-21. When Herod caught wind of the birth of a king from the Wise Men he sent the order to destroy all the baby boys of Bethlehem. Through the intervention of an angel sent by God the Holy Family was uprooted from the familiar and sent into Egypt. What sorrow also was in her heart in compassion for the children murdered as her own son was hunted!
The 3 rd Sorrow is The Loss of Jesus for Three Days given in Luke Chapter 2:41-50. What mother does not grieve when her beloved child disappears on a trip away from home? The Holy Mother is also confronted with the idea that her son Jesus will leave her again in obedience to His Heavenly Father.
The 4 th Sorrow is watching Jesus Carrying of the Cross in the Gospel of John Chapter 19:17. Mary caught sight of her son as he carried the cross through the city streets of Jerusalem. Can you imagine her sorrow of seeing his body torn to shreds by the scourging? How the serpent must have laughed at her and taunted her with the choice she made to have this son. But Mary did not abandon God nor her son in this difficult time.
The 5 th Sorrow: The Crucifixion of Jesus In the Gospel of John Chapter 19:18-30, Mary did not turn away in despair but in love stood at the foot of the cross. She did not run away in fear as did most of the apostles and disciples but stood by courageously to give her comfort to her son. She humbly accepted the direction of Jesus to be the Mother of John and of all of the followers of Jesus. There is something else to consider about the Blessed Mother Mary. Did she step in as the soldiers rolled the dice for the fine robe of Jesus and scream, “That’s mine! I gave it to him!” No. What healed Mary’s heart? The beloved apostle John stood by her side as she grieved. We, too, are called to be present to others in their need. The hope of the resurrection sustained her. Forty days later, when Jesus left her again at the Ascension she joined the other 120 who also mourned his leaving to pray and wait for the Promise of the Holy Spirit.
The 6 th Sorrow: Jesus Taken Down from the Cross in the Gospel of John Chapter 19:39-40. There is a well-known sculpture called the Pieta that shows Jesus laid in the arms of Mary as he is taken from the cross. The child Holy Mary held as an infant now appears to all the world as defeated. The serpent surely thinks he has won and destroyed once and for all the blueprint of Jesus. But Holy Mary continues to trust in God despite her extreme pain of the moment.
The 7th Sorrow: Jesus Laid in the Tomb in John Chapter 19:39-42. It seems a final separation. The Roman soldiers roll a heavy stone across the entry way. As Mary sorrowfully feels this separation, her prayers are unceasing as she prays for us, also her children, at the hour of our death not to be separated from her son for all eternity. Pray for a happy death. The Hail Mary prayer ends with a plan for a happy death. “Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.”
Since 1814 the Church commemorates these sorrows each year on September 15, the day after the Feast of the Holy Cross, as the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows to show the close connection between Jesus’ Passion and Mary’s Sorrows. The devotion of St. Bridget of Sweden of these sorrows began in the 14th Century and the sorrows of Holy Mary are also mentioned by the earliest Church Fathers: Ambrose, Anselm and Bernard.
Holy Mary, the human caretaker of Jesus, pondered not only the sorrows but also the joys and the glorious events of her life with Jesus. Jesus himself taught us to pray the “Our Father”. And we pray this public prayer together. This prayer that we, in turn, teach our children to pray, this prayer that Our Mother Mary calls us to pray at each mystery of the life of her son, is the prayer that gives us final preparation to receive our brother and our God. In the prayer of the Rosary, we join with our Holy Mother Mary in pondering all these Joyful Mysteries: the Annunciation of Angel Gabriel and her “yes” to the Holy Spirit, the Visitation to Elizabeth and the witness of the Holy Spirit in the infant John, the Birth of Jesus, the Presentation of the Holy Infant in the Temple, and the Finding of Child Jesus in the Temple. With Holy Mary we also ponder the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Agony in the Garden, the Scourging at the Pillar, the Crowning with Thorns, Carrying the Cross and the Crucifixion.
We pass through the dark night as the plan of God is revealed in the Glorious Mysteries: the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead, his Ascension to sit at the Father’s right hand in heaven, the Descent of the Holy Spirit restoring God’s original plan to the world, then Our Lady’s completion of that plan through her Assumption into heaven and Coronation as Queen Mother of Heaven.
The great Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, of Saint Pope John Paul II, fills in the gap between the Joyful and Sorrowful Mysteries with: the Baptism of Jesus, the 1st Miracle at Cana changing the water into wine, the Proclamation of the Gospel especially the Sermon on the Mount, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. What a beautiful picture of God’s Blueprint is given to us through the mysteries of the Rosary’s devotional prayers and meditations. Mother Mary is the treasury of God’s graces that can be released when she is petitioned through the rosary and other prayerful requests. The Blessed Mother Mary is in constant intercession for her children, the Church. No family was perfect except the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They make excellent intercessors for your family! All families! Mother Mary’s advice is “Pray, pray, pray!” Prayer can seem to be a ‘silly’ thing by those who do not know nor even acknowledge their Creator. Yet prayer has ended wars, saved lives, and brought redeeming grace to those who have been lost.
Holy Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit multiple times setting an example for us. We cannot receive holiness at our conception the way she did but we can be ‘born again’ of water during Baptism and become a tabernacle and receive the Holy Spirit. As Mary received, the Holy Spirit can bring Jesus into us, not our womb, but into our hearts and, actually, into our entire body through receiving Holy Communion. Holy Mary was present at the first Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was sent upon the Apostles and disciples. We, too, can receive the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation and during each conversion of heart experience.
There are some who quote the scripture when Jesus says, “Who is my mother?” to detract from the importance of Mary, Queen Mother of Heaven. Let’s look at that a moment. Jesus is not condescending towards his mother but is explaining that she is a prototype of God’s plan! In Mathew Chapter 12 verse 50, Jesus explains, “For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Holy Mary, above all creation, has done the will of God our Father in heaven!
Mary received the prophetic promises of Simeon at the Presentation in the Gospel of Luke; she also is in the prophetic vision of John in the Book of Revelation. She is the Woman clothed with the Sun in Revelation Chapter 11 and the Ark of the Covenant. In Chapter 21 she is the heavenly bride united with God and bears the child of God through the covenant promise. In Revelation 12 she is the Woman attacked by the Dragon.
Holy Mary, Mother of our Messiah, knew of the promises for the Messiah as a woman who studied scripture. We recognize the influence of scripture in her life especially Hannah’s Song of 1 Samuel 2:1-10 in the Magnificat that Holy Virgin Mary proclaims to Elizabeth in Gospel of Luke Chapter 1: 46-55. In it we recognize the Blueprint of God’s Plan:
“46 And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
48 for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’”
Each of you can follow God’s Blueprint given to us through Holy Mary, Mother of God! You, too, can have Christ within you! You, too, can be a temple of the Most Holy Spirit.
