I once heard a preacher talk about a man witnessing total destruction, he went on and on about this man who saw his house destroyed, never before had he known such a force. Then he heard a stirring and he called out, “Son is that you? Are you in there? Are you ok?” And the son replied, “I’m here dad, I’m ok.” … And the Father said, “Well, get up or you’ll be late for school, and when you get home clean up this room!”
Did you, like me, jump to a different conclusion at first? At the end, did you form a judgment against the son? Did you form a judgment against the Father? Did you form a judgment against the preacher for leading you to a conclusion?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph# 2478 instructs us, “To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor’s thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way: “Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another’s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.” 280 [i]
I am often guilty of forming opinions, of making quick judgments. I have spent years of trying to see other’s point of view, to give the benefit of the doubt to the actions of others. It seems like an endless battle. Today’s episode I am going to explore the importance of Releasing Judgment against others, releasing other’s judgments against you and avoiding judgment. You are listening to Truth of the Spirit. I’m your host, Patti Brunner.
In the Novena to the Holy Spirit, on the seventh day of the seventh week of Easter, we for pray for “the Gift of Counsel. The gift of Counsel endows the soul with supernatural prudence, enabling it to judge promptly and rightly what must be done, especially in difficult circumstances.”[ii]
There is a fine line between judging the sin and judging the sinner. The Lord has advised us, “seek not to judge the actions of others. As you continue to love them as I do your judgements will be less frequent. As you love as I do,” the Lord says, “you shall be stirred to help them in prayer and, in speaking, teach in the truth, but you also shall know that you cannot hold them accountable for their ignorance.”
False judgment is a line we draw in the sand that has no truth and must be swept away before it takes root in our hearts or damages others.
In speaking to the “Offenses against Truth”[iii], the Catechism says in Paragraph# 2477, “Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury. 278 He becomes guilty: – of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor; – of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them; 279 – of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them.” [iv]
Over the years the Lord has said to me, “My child, your love is joined to mine. Fear not. Pray with understanding not with judgment”. He also told me, “My child the difficulty in your heart centers foremost on love. It is difficult to love beyond condition, without judgment, without selfishness, without recompense. Yet, you have been given this opportunity. Stay with Me a little while longer in this. It will bear fruit.”
We are to love without judgment. The Lord says, “When true love for others is in the heart one can forego the “justification” of judgement against the actions of others and thus release to God all judgement, for Jesus shall come to judge the living and the dead. As you release your judgement against others you find joy and peace. Not as the world would claim it but as the Spirit gives it—in truth, true joy; true peace.”
Once, I prayed with a wife for her husband; the Lord had me instruct the wife to cover her husband with her love, that where Love is—love without judgment—the Lord is present. God is Love, and his presence brings healing. This revelation shows us why praying with Love is so important. Here is another example that should help you: As I prayed for a mother whose daughter was struggling with unkind girls at school, the Lord reminded me that sometimes instead of praying for others to change so that we can be happy it is necessary that we change, and as we surrender ourselves to the Lord we find joy in those relationships rather than judgement. As I prayed for them I seemed to hear the Lord say that this struggle of the daughter was bringing the mother and father closer to the Lord in their prayer for the daughter; the Lord bringing good from bad—and that her sensitivity was a gift that will allow her to have a deeper relationship with God. When I asked the Lord if I heard this correctly He said to me: “My child, the children of the Light are always tormented by the children of Darkness. Fear not. This child will not succumb to the wiles of the enemy. She is strengthened by the love of her parents. What they need to realize: they, too, are judging my precious daughter. They see her with the eyes of what they desire her to be rather than rejoicing in the beautiful wonderful creation she is with her uniqueness and her special discernment of the motives of others. Splendor is hers,” says the Lord. “This child shall lead many into the kingdom by her deep love. Is it not surprising that she does not comprehend when others are shallow? Remind her, constantly, of my love for her. She is the “apple of my eye”, she is “knit together wonderfully”, she is the one whom the ember shall touch to open the mouth to speak the Lord’s blessings. Invite her to write her thoughts. If she chooses to share them you shall see the depth of her young heart–a depth far beyond her years.” The Lord continued his word to share, “Fear not, dear mother and father. She is in my hands. Place her under the mantle of my Mother where she will find consolation and peace, but remember: the course of your lives is the Way. It is narrow; it leads to Life, life everlasting. Give thanks to the Lord for He is Good! His Love endures forever!”
The Lord says, “My child, the truth will set them free. They have not heard truth even though it has been taught to them. Seek to open their hearts to know how much I love them. Jesus overcame the fear of suffering and death. Jesus overcame the fear of ridicule and rejection. He stepped out of the acceptable norm to do what was just and what pleased the Father. He did not judge others but always treated even the ‘public’ sinners with love and compassion. True, he did speak bluntly to those who closed their hearts and minds to the truth, but even this bluntness did not sharpen the senses of those whose hearts were set against him. Jesus overcame to heal, to drive out demons, and to manifest God’s glory. He demonstrated God’s kingdom on earth and taught you to pray each day for the kingdom to be manifested on earth as it is in heaven. This day was made by the Lord, rejoice in it and be glad, for today the Lord is placing truth in the hearts of the youth. And truth will set them free. Ask the Holy Spirit to stir into flame the grace that was bestowed upon them at baptism and confirmation. The glory of the Lord shall be upon them and they shall be changed. Desire the Lord, for today He shall be yours. Desire the Lord, above all things with your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul and all this shall be given unto you.”
As the Lord taught me about release from judging, the Lord says, “My child as the words are chosen, know that others shall judge you. Pray for release of judgement.” I asked the Lord to show me how to be clear of this—to be free from fear or anxiety from the judgment of others. The Lord told me, “My child the everlasting needs of the people are met in Christ, with Christ, through Christ. As you abandon your needs unto the Lord, indeed surrender them fully, you shall find your peace. It is very difficult for most people to do this. The urge for physical survival draws people to work out the solution of “What am I to wear” “What am I to eat.” As you die to self and live for Christ the questions “How can I please You!” and “How will this ‘decision’ give glory to God?” will be deeply rooted in your heart and thus all anxiety disappears and the heavenly realm takes care of every need. You’re thinking “how is that possible?” Remember all things are possible for those called by Me for My purpose,” the Lord says. “As long as the moon shines upon the earth’s waters, there is hope. When the desecrated is made holy, when the punished are set free, when heaven and earth stands still in the Glory of God—then you shall see the judgement of the righteous and the wicked. Whenever the darkness meets the Light it must leave. Continue to shine the Light of the Lord into the recesses of darkness.”
I remember a vision I received, once, as I prayed for a woman who had a stroke from a brain aneurism. She was totally alone in the hospital when I arrived. This vision showed me that those who prayed for her were thinking how “bad” it all was; I found out later that included her doctor who did not expect her to recover. The vision was of the angels required to protect her from their negative judgement. Are our prayers tainted with darkness of our own negativity and judgement? Is there a spiritual law here that keeps us from receiving the fullness of the Lord’s benefits? As in your heart you think so does the eminent drain of strength happen when the negative, the callus, the dire, the destructive thoughts also mold the range of emotional prayers. Immediately I prayed for the angels to surround her and protect her from judgment as her body responded to healing. I prayed for her healing. I prayed against the judgment of well-meaning people. I prayed with the confidence of healing that the Lord instilled within my heart and mind. She recovered, and the doctor witnessed that it was a miracle.
The Lord says, “Dearest child, I do watch over the children who are affected by the choices of others. I am with them even unto death and judgement; they are not alone. I hear your prayer and I shall open the gates of “possibility” for the children to find freedom in Christ. It is their decision. I shall comfort the people, as always. Know that I love them. I love them as a sweet babe in arms, as a wayward child, as an aged parent that need the hand of the Lord to rescue them and hold them. But, know this daughter, when they choose to turn away from Me—not as a Babe or a child but as a mature adult who makes decisions rationally, they are lost.”
The Lord also taught me about the Release from Judgment through Reconciliation. The Lord says, “My Child, the everlasting drop of my Mercy overcomes the law, and those who are bound by it would receive the true judgement allocated to their actions. I bring freedom to the captives. Obedience to the Father is the act of the Son that provided salvation, freedom. Come and enjoy the fruit of obedience. The sinner is called to repentance. In the Son, repentance brings restoration. In the Son, the hope for reconciliation is found. The Son has set apart the effect of sin: Death. In the Son you may be restored to God by the Spirit.
Connected to judgment is the need to forgive. The Lord says, “My child, the forgiveness given to those who have harmed you or those you love signifies the Kingdom’s power on earth in the heart of man. My servant David exemplified that forgiveness can be given at any time—it is a choice that love brings about more easily”.
Who did King David forgive without judgment? As you look at scripture, as a young man, David forgave his King, Saul, who had wrongfully judged him, and then had hunted David to kill him out of jealousy. Later on, David forgave his son Amnon who raped David’s daughter Tamar. He forgave his son Absalom who killed his step-brother Amnon for his sin. David forgave his son Absalom a second time when he usurped the throne of King David. He forgave Shimei who cursed David instead of giving him a refuge as David fled his enemies. That’s a lot of forgiveness without judgment!
Fr. John Anthony[v] has said, “I am convinced at the root of every sin is a fear of suffering.” What suffering are we trying to avoid in judging others? Do we find judging a way of avoiding being embarrassed by their actions? Is it based on pride, thinking, “I would never do what they are doing!” thus putting yourself above them? Is it shifting blame to someone else? When we turn to the Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation in repentance are we not asking to be released from God’s judgment against us? One time during Reconciliation, my confessor told me, “Remember you are in a holy place as you enter and that Satan will tempt you to think of other things. Thank God for your gifts. Ask Him to gift others. When you see someone in a “judging way”—pray for that person. Pray for them to have the fullness of God. When you think something negative, offer that in prayer and pray for good to take place.”
The Lord says, “My child, as you have seen, it is quite easy to turn your back to me as you turn away from love and compassion. Seek not to be grounded in the things of this world but turn your eyes toward Me.”
The Lord says, “My child, the forgiveness needed between men shows forth in the body of mankind. Each wound that is unforgiven fails to heal and thus the whole body suffers. When the sky turns black in the day, do you not say a storm is upon us? Thus shall you also make note of the day of judgement. The sign of the Lord shall be just as clear, there will be no doubt in the hearts of the just man.”
The Lord says, “My Child, the decision of each man, woman, child to accept the kingdom of God as truth, as the Way, as life centers on a surrender of self for the benefit of others—including for the benefit of pleasing God. When one steps out of ‘self’ – whether “self-preservation’ or ‘selfish wealth’ or ‘selfish pleasure’ or ‘self-centered fear’ – the kingdom can be attained. Being ‘one’ with the Lord requires you to ‘die to self’. It is only by being one with the Father that you can actually be the completely unique creation that the Lord intended at your creation. For it is then that you stop bending according to the wind of the world’s desire and judgement and you stand tall in the Light of Christ. The everyday living and choosing measure your potential for kingdom fruit. As you ‘produce’ this fruit, others are fed and enriched as the kingdom also enters their lives.”
The Lord says, “My child, each dark soul is allowed into the light of Christ for judgement. Pain and sorrow is always considered. Freewill choices with complete awareness cast many into permanent darkness. They are those who consider the mercy of God an avenue to allow sin. Sinfulness does not exist in the heavenly kingdom of my Father. Come to me, with hearts that choose life, truth, that choose love and obedience to the will of God.”
The Lord says, “My child, as you bring your requests to Me, I listen. Obey the commands of the Lord and favor shall rest upon you. The heavenly gates arise from the dusk of the days of man and they swing open as the trumpet calls the faithful to arise. Singling out the sinner from amongst their midst, salvation and judgement hangs in mid-air. Have you done all that you could to lead the sinner to repentance? If so, you shall not stand beside him. If you have joined forces with darkness to entice him away from Me,” the Lord says, “you shall stand beside him and will join him in his fate. But answer Me this: What about the person who does both good and evil? Who shall stand in judgement? Only the Lord God, Savior of the world shall speak truth in judgement. Pray for mercy. Pray for forgiveness.”
“The choices you make now impact eternity. The second coming, the judgment is coming to everyone. The scripture is clear in this prophecy.” “Those who follow Jesus are marked by Baptism. Christians, as “Marked Man” are targets for those who do not accept the truth. Thus true believers, true disciples are ‘tested’ by the unbelievers—the rejecters of the kingdom. When you walk in the Way of the Lord: Serving, healing, with humility and justice, you might face hardship and trial but you will always receive the final recompense—eternal life within the Kingdom of God. Those, who torment you, have already been judged and condemned.” “The Lord God grants Mercy to all who seek him with all their hearts.”
“When all is said and done, all shall enter into judgement. All those who take their places ordained by the Father in eternity will look back with joy and fulfillment that they lived their lives to the fullness of the vocation calling and grace set forth for them from the creation of the world.”
“As sinners you would receive the judgement accorded by the law and thus condemnation; Jesus came to stand-in for You. He accepted your sin to take upon himself the sins—like the scapegoat and sacrifice—thus bringing freedom. He who knew no sin became sin, that in his righteousness you might be saved.”
The Lord says, “Know that all life centers on the Resurrection of Jesus. You shall also rise again with Him. Fear not the sting of death—it is only a reminder that this world is fleeting. So many fear death as the “unknown” but as you understand the kingdom and hope in God’s merciful judgment fear is replaced by expectation and joy. As you live each day according to God’s commands and promise you live without regret and without the sense of work left undone. You comprehend that the Body of Christ takes up the standard you lay down and goes on. The person who fears the death of another also lacks comprehension of the will of God. Whether you look at the difficulties you personally will have because of the death, which means you have placed your trust in that person rather than in God; or you fear for the judgement of the person—which means you do not trust God’s mercy and understanding and have failed to do as you have been commanded to bring about joy in the person’s life; you must surrender to God what is His and remove the fear from your heart.”
The Lord says, “Know that I suffered and died to give you life—life everlasting, abundant life—joy filled, love-filled life. You do not, cannot comprehend death without hope that caused the rescue of Noah. My light “returned” to set free the captives from eternal death. Even now, some/many court disaster with their sinful choices. My gift of freewill, meant to choose good, has been used for vileness. The Lord says, I spew from my mouth those who choose such evil and welcome it into their hearts. I took them into my heart in the garden, to offer them life, to save and redeem them and they not only reject Me; they hate me. The angels knew Me but they (some) turned away, so, too, man has turned away from Me. Sink into my love; instill in the children my love. Congratulate and encourage those who seek my face. For the Lord God is a mighty God, rich in Mercy, everlasting in kindness, a just Judge. Do not allow this message, this Word to cause a loss of hope. I want you to see that the need is real. It is a matter of life and death—not in this world but in eternity.”
Before we close, pray this with me: Lord, I release all rash judgments, all false judgments, and all judgments that were made by me against others. I ask you, Lord, to heal any damage done by my judgment. Lord, I ask for judgements to be broken on myself that were set into motion when I judged others. Lord, I pray for a release of all judgements against me by others, especially by those who desire to offer sympathy to me or themselves. I ask that all barriers that keep the fullness of the kingdom from my life be removed. Dearest Lord, you are the most just judge. I surrender all judgment to your merciful heart. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.

[ii] Novena to the Holy Spirit. Novena to the Holy Spirit (9 days before Pentecost)
http://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/pentecost/seven_tx.htm
“The Novena begins on the day after the Solemnity of the Ascension, Friday of the 6th Week of Easter, even if the Solemnity of the Ascension is transferred to the 7th Sunday.
“FOREWRD The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian.”
“SEVENTH DAY (Thursday, 7th Week of Easter) Heal our wounds–our strength renews; On our dryness pour Thy dew, Wash the stains of guilt away.
The Gift of Counsel The gift of Counsel endows the soul with supernatural prudence, enabling it to judge promptly and rightly what must done, especially in difficult circumstances. Counsel applies the principles furnished by Knowledge and Understanding to the innumerable concrete cases that confront us in the course of our daily duty as parents, teachers, public servants, and Christian citizens. Counsel is supernatural common sense, a priceless treasure in the quest of salvation. “Above all these things, pray to the Most High, that He may direct thy way in truth.”
Prayer Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide me in all my ways, that I may always do Thy holy will. Incline my heart to that which is good; turn it away from all that is evil, and direct me by the straight path of Thy commandments to that goal of eternal life for which I long.

[iii] III. OFFENSES AGAINST TRUTH
2477 Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury. 278 He becomes guilty:
– of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor;
– of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them; 279
– of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them.
2478 To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor’s thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way:
Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another’s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved. 280
